Dealing with change, stress, disruption or loss is an inevitable part of life. At some point, everyone experiences varying degrees of setbacks. Some of these challenges might be relatively minor, while others are disastrous on a much larger scale.
People, therefore, need varying strategies that best suit them. How we deal with these problems can play a major role in not only the outcome, but also the long-term psychological consequences.
Resilience does not eliminate stress or erase life's difficulties. Instead, it gives people the strength to tackle problems head on, overcome adversity and move on with their lives. Resilience involves behaviours, thoughts and actions that can be learned and developed in anyone. Developing resilience is a personal journey. People do not all react the same to traumatic and stressful life events. An approach to building resilience that works for one person might not work for another. People use varying strategies.
